Meet The Band

who are second line?

Pete Johnson
Trombone, Piano, Accordion, Mouth Organ & M.D.
Recognised by his wonderful collection of trouser braces, Pete is the Musical Director of the band. He has played with the Prince Henry’s Jazz Orchestra, Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra and continues to play with The Cuginis and numerous other big bands and jazz ensembles nationwide. Currently nearing the end of his studies at Leeds College of Music, Pete is a talented player with a long career ahead of him..

Matthew Hadden

Trumpet & Flugel Horn

Matt plays trumpet and flugel for Second Line, and is feared for his chops of steel and pointed wit. His blagging skills never fail to glean the band the free cuppa that they so desperately crave. He has also played for The Prince Henry’s Jazz Orchestra and the Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra and continues to play in several ensembles in Canterbury where he is currently studying.

Rose Johnson

Alto Sax & Vocals

Rose is the only female member of the band and makes up for our immaturity on stage. She sings a range of styles and genres with her powerful vocals as well as playing with Prince Henry’s Jazz Orchestra and Celebration Big Band on Alto Sax. She is a well-known face across The Midlands and has sung in several groups including The Harms, an all-female harmony group singing modern numbers with a twist.. Currently studying at The Birmingham Conservatoire, she continues to extend her musical ability even further.

Ramsay Evans

Tenor Sax & Soprano Sax

Ramsay is a keen Big Band musician having played with WYJO, Prince Henry’s Jazz Orchestra, The Jay Cee Big Band, John Wood Big Band, University of the West of England Big Band and several other smaller bands in the region, but his main influence and achievement was learning from the legendary Tenor Saxophone player Trevor Emeny. Whilst he still plays with the band, he gave up the dream and is currently a Property Consultant in London.

Graham Irving
Keys & Male Vocals
Graham, also known as ‘Thunder Fists’, is famous for his intreverso piano solos and the speed at which he can play. He has played with the Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra for many years and has a huge level of experience in performing on stage. There aren’t many tunes he doesn’t know, and more recently he has begun to sing with the band, performing the best from Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones (where appropriate)..

Matthew Deakin
Electric Bass and Double Bass
Matthew is a talented classical musician on Violin, Violin and piano and won the title of ‘Evesham Young Musician of the Year 2011’ on Violin, however his passion for Jazz has seen him play with numerous bands across The Midlands, including Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra and Prince Henry’s Jazz Orchestra. His musical knowledge is second to none although there’s nothing he likes more than letting his hair down for a bit of funk.

Daniel Waller
Keys & Piano
Daniel has played piano and keys for us on numerous gigs, and is the master of all things funky. His relentless sight reading means he can play from guitar and alto parts. Some even say he needs no music at all. We named him Fats Waller after the pianists of the day.

Bell Blackmore
Electric Bass
Bell is a talented flute player and a talented classical musician; however she is also a mean electric bass player, and has played with Second Line on several gigs, providing the all-important walking bass that is key to the jazz, blues and swing for which we are well known.

Lee Fisher
Drums
Lee is a very talented musician and musical director. Although he plays Drums for us on a regular basis he is also a classically- trained trumpeter and has directed several singing groups and ensembles across Worcestershire and The Midlands.

Harry Orme

Guitar & Male Vocals

Having first played drums with the band, and later sung Male Vocals, Harry now focuses his talents on guitar. He is currently studying Jazz at the Leeds College of Music and plays with numerous bands throughout the region.

Guest Musician - Bruce Evans
Electric Bass
Bruce is an experienced musician having played piano, bass and guitar in rock, pop and jazz groups since his teens. He is also a successful song writer, composer and arranger, and his ability to play by ear and busk numbers is critical for requests and last- minute set changes. He has played with the band on several occasions and continues to play with several groups across The Midlands.
